The information that you are about to read was taken from one of the most controversial books ever written. Hit Man was pulled from shelves and publication was terminated in 1993 after the information was said to have been used in a mass murder. Below is the definition of this book taken from Wikipedia:
Hit Man: A Technical Manual for Independent Contractors is a book written under the pseudonym Rex Feral and published by Paladin Press in 1983. It has been claimed that the book started life as a detailed crime novel written by a Florida housewife, and that the format was later changed to appeal to Paladin's reader base. The book portrays itself as a how-to manual on starting a career as a hit man, fulfilling contracts.
Existing copies at Paladin Press were destroyed after the book was found to be used as a guide during a triple murder in 1993 (see below), but it can still be found online or can be purchased used from independent sellers. It is believed that 13,000 copies were sold, although Reason Magazine estimates there are 20,000 copies of the book in existence.
In this article I am going to discuss the methods described in this book to build an improvised silencer for a standard, fixed-barrel .22 caliber pistol. This technique is very inexpensive (you can build a working model for around $40.00). The techniques are very effective and it is worth noting that production and possession of an assembled silencer or the parts used to make a silencer are illegal in the United States and many other countries. This information is presented for information purposes ONLY and you are strongly encourage NOT to attempt to build a silencer unless you have the proper authorization from the government.

What is a silencer?
In order to understand how to construct an inexpensive yet effective pistol silencer we must first understand how and why a silencer works and be aware of the limitations inherent in all sound supperssion.
What makes a gunshot loud?
The rapport, or the sound produced when firing a gun is caused by three different actions. First, the gunpowder, or propellant heats up gasses and those hot gasses exit the barrel of the gun and collide with cooler air outside and create what can be approximated to "thunder". Second, the bullet, or projectile, if it is traveling faster than the speed of sound (1130 feet per second) will create a small sonic boom, or ballistic "crack" when it breaks the sound barrier. Lastly, the action, or moving parts of an automatic or semi-automatic gun creates a much quieter, yet noticeable sound when the metal parts work to eject the spent shell casing and load a fresh round. All but the last element of sound can be reduced by employing a silencer.
A silencer, or sound suppressor works by containing the hot, rapidly moving gasses expelled by the burning propellant in the ammunition and allowing those cooled gasses to escape at a slower than normal rate. This reduced the "thunder" sound of the gunshot. Many silencer, including the one described in this article, employ what is known as a "wipe" to slow the speed of the bullet and to further contain and slow the escape of gasses. A wipe is simply a piece of flexible material that comes into physical contact with the projectile and thereby causes it to slow down to reduce the "ballistic crack". Used together, these two methods will produce a very effective silencer for any small bore gun.

What you will need: Materials
- 7/32" Drill Rod orWooden Dowel (hardware Store)
- 1 Foot of 1.25" PVC Pipe (Hardware Store)
- 12" of 1/4" Brake Line (Auto Parts Store)
- 1 Quart of Fiberglass Resin and Hardener (Hardware or Auto parts Store)
- 1 Yard of Thin Fiberglass Mat (Hardware or Auto Parts Store)
- 1 Roll of Masking Tape (Hardware or Auto Parts Store)
- 1 1/8" Drill Bit (Hardware Store)
- 1 3/16" Drill Bit (Hardware Store)
- Several Rubber Bands
- Several Single Side Razor Blades
- 80 Grit Sandpaper (Hardware or Auto Parts Store)
- 6 Small Wood Screws
- 1 Box Steel Wool (Hardware or Auto Parts Store)
- 1 Container of White Lithium Grease
Making it all work:
Cut a 10-inch section from the brake line. See figure 1. Drill a set of 1/8 inch holes down the length of the tube going in one side and out the other. The holes go all the way through. Notice in the photograph that the holes begin 1-1/2 inches from the end of the tube that fits on the gun.
Next, take a 3/16 inch drill bit and enlarge the holes. See figure 2.
Using masking tape and keeping the tape as free of wrinkles as possible, mask off about six inches of the gun barrel and the end of the barrel. Use only masking tape. Duct tape is too thick and would make for an improper fit. See figure 3.
Then place the drill rod down the barrel to keep the brake tube aligned. This perfect alignment is extremely important.
If the drill rod you purchase is a little too large, as sometimes happens, put it in a drill and using a file and sandpaper (80 grit), turn down the first six inches until it will fit inside the gun barrel. I operate the drill from the floor with my foot, letting the rod spin between my knees as I reduce the size. Check regularly until you achieve a perfect fit. If you grind the rod too small, cut it off and start over. Fit must be tight with no play.
Wrap glass mat around the gun and tube three times. Secure it with string or rubber bands every half inch to keep it tight and in place. The glass should be wrapped about two inches behind the sight and up to the first hold on the tube.
Now mix the resin. About a shot glassful will do. Mix it two or three times hotter than the package directions.
Brace the gun in an upright position and dab the resin into the glass cloth with a stubby brush. Keep dabbling until the cloth is no longer white but has become transparent from absorption of the resin.
As soon as the glass is tacky to touch without sticking (times differs according to weather conditions and humidity), it is time to remove the piece from the barrel. Move fast!
First, take a razor blade and cut a notch behind the sight so the piece can be removed. Then push on the glass to slide it off. Do not pull on the tube.
After removing the gun barrel, peel out the tape and allow it to finish hardening. You must work quickly. If you let the glass harden too much on the gun, you will have to cut it off and begin again.
Use a grinder and 80 grit sandpaper to smooth the hardening rough surface.
Next, grind the sides down about halfway, but do not grind past the point where the front of the sight makes contact. Cut it down until the barrel fits easily and snugly.
Stand the glassed inner tube upright in a vise.
Mix a small amount of resin and use an eyedropper to fill in any interior holes or air bubbles until the solid fiberglass is level with the steel tube end. This will give the junction of the steel inner tube and glass coupling added strength.
Clean the eyedropper with acetone.
Cut the PVC tube to desired length. This one is eight inches.
Drill a large hole in the center of one cap, making it large enough to fit on the glass end to the point where the sight makes contact.
Then drill small holes all around the cap at the bottom, as shown, with a 3/16 bit.
Wrap masking tape around the cap to cover the holes.
Stand the cap with the inside tube inserted into a vise. Get the cap level and straight with the tube.
Cut a lot of 1/2 inch square pieces of fiberglass matting and fill the cap with it up past the level of the small holes.
Mix resin and pour it over the cut glass to a point about 1/4 inch above the holes and allow it to dry before removing the cap from the vise. Don't worry about any resin that leaks out around the base hole. Resin fills the small holes, making the tube strong enough to take the blast when you fire the gun.
When the inside is hardened, turn the assembly over and add glass around the backside of the cap for added strength as shown. Avoid getting resin in the opening where the barrel fits.
Place the finished cap and inner tube on one end of the PVC tubing that has already been cut to size. Center the inner tube as you look in the open end of the PVC.
Now drill a 1/8 inch hole in three place around the tube about 1/4 inch from the lip of the cap.
Take the inner tube out and enlarge the holes in the cap to 3/16 inch.
Replace the inner tube and tighten it down with three small wood screws.
Trim the inside tube down until it extends about 1/2 inch beyond the outside PVC tube.
Sharpen one end of the drill rod to a point and use as a punch. Stand the tube up with the solid cap down. Then drop the drill rod down the inner tube to get a true center mark.
Find a drill bit a little larger than the outside diameter of the inner tube. Remove the cap and drill the hole.
Replace the cap on the open end of the PVC and drill three 1/8 inch holes around the cap as before for wood screw.
Grind off any inner tube that sticks out. make it flush with the face of the cap.
Unfold the sections of steel wool and roll between palms to make strands as shown.
Feed the strands into the silencer tube in a circular motion, packing the wool tight with a stick. Do this until the tube is completely full.
Replace the end cap with the three screws.
Paint the finished silencer black and attach it to your weapons. You may want to ensure proper alignment by wrapping tape or placing a hose clamp around the extension behind the sight.
THE FINISHED PRODUCT
Your finished product is whisper-quiet, the way a silencer is supposed to be! It is inexpensive, effective and reusable for over four hundred rounds before you will need to repack.

a 22 bullet will not fit in a 1/4 brake tube, get a bigger one or it may blow up in your face, the brake tube has to be 1/4 inside, not the outter O.D. I think you need to actually compare the bullet to the 1/4 brake line, I was a mechanic for years and I know very well a 22 bullet will NOT fit inside a 1/4 brake line, Sorry dude your busted...lol

I am holding one in my had, completed and test fired about 100 times. Would you like to guess what? It did not blow up in my face. Here's why.
I'll do the math for you since you are a mechanic and things like math might throw you off.
Fact: a .22 caliber bullet is 5.7 mm in diameter.
Fact: A 1/4 inch brake line is 6.5 mm in diameter.
Fact: Bundy tubing has a wall thickness of 0.028" or 0.71 mm
Here is the embarrassing part for you:
Tube = 6.5 mm
Wall thickness = 0.71 mm
Inside diameter = 5.79 mm
.22 bullet = 5.7mm

I tried it using the brake line as per your instruction, and the .22 bullet or .22 air pellet will not fit inside the brake line tube. The outside diameter is exact 1/4", and when I tried to push the .22 pellet into it, it would not fit, too small because of the wall of the brake-line is a bit too thick. Any other suggestion will be appreciated.

I have a comment, why don't you just buy one already made. The gentleman who wrote this how to blog said it costs roughly $40.00 to build this one and it is made from p.v.c.! (ha ,ha no offense) I happen to know where you can buy one from oversea's fron $49-79.00. One is made from aluminum and the other is made from steel. They are quality silencers with machined Baffles instead of steel wool (and they can be dismanteled for cleaning.)
im with yo-yo on this one guys, i am a gun smith of 10 years and have seen some of the inventive things people have made for there guns. i seen some one try the pop bottle silencer and it did not reck their gun the pop bottle blew up in there hand when they shot it. he lost all feeling in his hand and had to get stiches down his rist. i think fr0gman was just puting this out here for someone who would like to know more about how it worked. i do not think someone should make their own silencer. if you do how ever good luck and really, really, really think things threw!

i've made one from a soda can and a couple of old hats before but it is olny good for a few shots or so but it was still fun to make and shoot.
Change to a higher impulse powder with a smaller charge such that the end of barrel pressure is near, or closer to, zero. Longer barrel helps. Requires some experimentation but does work rather well. 17cal Finnish sniper rifle adapts well to this technique
I would not attempt to build a silencer, unless you are a skilled gunsmith. To make a long story short, you can buy a Gemtech suppressor for a .22 pistol for $325. In most states allowing silencers, it must be through a Class III gun dealer and you will have to complete the required BATF paperwork and submit $200 federal stamp fee. This is to own the silencer legally.
I have the Gemtech Outback II attached to a Walther P22 semi-automatic pistol. This particular pistol requires no modifications, as the barrel is already threaded. The dealer will charge you a processing fee. In my case it was $75. The P22 can be found new at about $325 street. So, the final price for the rig was about $800....and I love it...quiet as a mouse.
Now, here's the rub. In most states allowing silencers you must acquire a Class II permit from your local sheriff or police department. You must reside in their jurisdiction. That also means you must have a concealed weapons permit in most cases. The sheriff's department in each county in NC is charged with that responsibility. Often issuing a Class II permit is at the discretion of the individual sheriff....and many won't authorize the silencer, although they are required to offer a CCW permit (I have one) by law if you pass the qualifications tests.
Check with your local authority regarding what rules govern your purchase. Under no circumstances carry a suppressed weapon without legal authority to do. You will probably be looking at a felony crime and that will haunt you for many years to come.

I just tried the pop bottle, I wrapped hi voltage tape around bull barrel 10/22 ruger slid on mountain dew bottle with 1/2 inch hole in bottom center, walked outside and racked off 6 shots and did not even wake the old lady and did not hurt anything, hell I left it on there for now. I would say it cut down the sound by at least 2/3. I think tomorrow I will cut bottle in half and glue some steel wool all along insides leaving good passage for the bullet. This should help some more hell Im not trying to kill anybody, But if I want to snipe a deer in the night nobody will know, and it did not show in my scope, I bet frogmans works great , It took about 5 minutes to make this one.

Some yrs ago we made a few.25cal suppressors. instead of steel wool we filled the tube between the baffles with small brass eyelets (not the washer part)they worked extremely well as the brass dissipates heat well and disrupts the flow of gasses. Plus they don't burn out.

Silencers are legal after following the .gov's requirements for owning one. No permit or license is required, an application and tax stamp are required. Without payment of the aforementioned tax you face felony charges and an extended stay in prison.

have to count the thickness not once but twice.

My villain (in the book All's Fair) is to be shot at Goodwood races (UK) I had no idea of the mechanics required by a Hit Man except speed, efficiency and secrecy. I am researching this now and am extremely grateful for the information on here. I thought a seach for Hit Man would bring a zero; this is welcome information, many thanks.
Man, just use a short or low powder .22 round(in Canada these are subsonic), drill a whole through a potato, stick it on the end of the barrel, get within 30 feet of who your target is and shoot...you get the same effect...you all talk alot but know nothing about this.....and lets face it the only reason you would ever want a silencer is to kill someone...not for "target" shooting.... ofcourse if you have a proper baffling system you will only hear the click of the firing pin hit the shell if you use subsonic ammo, but most who want to kill do not have the Patience for that, the method i described will make a small pop sound, like a cap from a childs toy gun. I can say from experience if you use this method in a noisy environment no one will notice...except if they see you.

I too finally bought a real silencer/suppressor by SWR called a Spectre in .22 cal. It is one of their models that can be disassembled for cleaning. It is made of Stainless steel and a bit more expensive than most but worth the extra fin. It is SO freaking cool!!!! I love it. Best to use with RWS subsonic ammo or for mouse fart silent use colibri ammo that uses NO powder...only the power from the rim fire primer. Hardly more powerful than a pellet gun but completely silent except for the hammer strike and the sound of the round hitting the target! I kid you not.
You can buy a silencer using a corporation with out having to get a police signature on your BATF form. I didnt bother with that. I just went ahead and got our local Lieutenant to sign my form. it was painless. You do NOT have to give any reason at all for wanting a silencer. It was a breeze. Do NOT get caught using one illegally. They sell a lot of them in my area legally and no one blinks an eye. Paperwork was easy but took about 6 months to clear.

To the author of this article. Be nice. Also, you probably shouldn't waste your time on an article such as this. My reasoning, your knowledge of gun laws seems limited, and very much out of date.
Silencers are legal in most states w/ the proper tax stamp(that must be kept w/ the silencer at ALL TIMES). An individual may manufacture a silencer for their own private use provided it's legal in the area in which they live. There is a proper procedure to do so legally. Check your local and Federal laws people. Don't be listening to some opinionated person on the internet spewing his own opinion as fact, and belittling people for questioning his opinion.

ive made a few silencers recently. something that works good is about a 1 in. tube or pvc pipe, and tape wrapperd arount the barrel so it fits snugly, and then wrap the tube with a pvc insulting cover, then use some tape all around it to silence vibration from the sound. that is not professional, but it works decently. if you want, you can cut sertions every inch or so, and cover it with cling wrap, then repeat, and it works even better.

The benefits of having a suppressor are actually many. It is very nice to not have to wear hearing protection while shooting with friends. You can actually instruct in a more comfortable setting. Second, when shooting outdoors you do not have to worry about the neighborhood panicking when they hear a "Gunshot". What is important here is that it is possible for you to seriously injure yourself by designing and firing a fast moving projectile through anything made of something hard enough to cause serious damage if turned into a projectile itself. Fiberglass is not something I want hurled at me at 450 fps. It is also a felony to have in your possession the apparatus to suppress a firearm, unless you have the appropriate paperwork. I would encourage anyone reading this to abide by the law, especially when a felony is involved. Speeding is a misdemeanor and does not get you three years in a federal prison for your first offense. Buy one legally and spend the money, you will be happy, satisfied, and legal. Good luck!
I made two 12 guage mole killer traps from 3/4 galvanized pipe. They are a little dangerous, so, when I see a mole actively pushing up dirt I go for the rifle. I just got one big one with the trap and two with the Model 12. I have neighbors within a few hundred yards and don't like the sound. It is the concussion that kills instantly. The trap is an inch off the ground and does not make too much noise. The gun is horrible. Any ideas?

Silencers are good for the enviroment. They cut down on noise pollution, they reduce the flame coming out of the muzzle, limiting the chance of sparking an accidental fire during the dry seasons, they collect lead residue which can be disposed of safely at the end of the silecer's lifecycle. They also increase the size of small weapons, making it harder to conceal. With all these benefits, there should be a law making it mandatory to use a silencer with you firearm. Automobiles are required to use silencers, in fact, off road vehicle are required to use "spark arresting" silencers. Let's propose to create a law to mandate the use of firearm silencers today!

Or you can skip the gibberish in this diy and go to your pantry... get a pringles can and some bottled anything, cut to fit into the pringles can, alternate stuffing anything that doesn't ignite easily (cut up a hand towel or something)and the tops of the bottles. cut a paper towel tube to fit around the end of your rifle or pistol, this maintains the bottle tops in a straight line. tape it together to maintain shape, put it all together and stuff it inside the pringles can and cut a hole in the metal end and the top. secure with duct tape and then you're done... i did this and it worked very well, hushed a .308 nicely.
Well I have to say, this has been the best 30mins of reading I have had for ages, being an Engineer by trade and amateur Gunsmith there are some errors in what is written but the intent is correct, just make sure you use straight tubing with an i/d slightly lager than the o/d of your projectile and all will be good, in NZ it is illegal to own a Silencer but we are allowed to own a Supressor..... so guess what, they are all called Supressors, whether homemade, purchased from a retail outlet or bought over the internet, I use one similar as suggested on here for Possum Hunting at night and it works a treat.

You guys should really think about the fact that if you're caught with one of these you get a felony. Which, in turn means, you can't own a gun legally!! Do it legally pay the extra money if you want one that bad. You won't have to worry about getting caught, or f*ckin this "project" up on accident and blowing your hand off.

It is a real shame. I have lived on the same 21 acres of land for the past 22 years and have a good shooting range and backstop. Now developers have built houses on 1/2 acre plots all around us, so when I want to shoot my S&W 686, I get complaints from the neighbors to the local sheriff. We have to stop, discuss with the sheriff, at which time I tell him I live in the county and will exercise my right to shoot as I see fit, and as long as conditions are safe. I have had to post my land 3 times where the signs keep getting torn down. These people still think they live in the city and can tell their neighbors their rights. I think it is about time to put up the 38's and get out the 357's, or better yet, the Ruger Redhawk 44 mag. Damn, those are expensive to shoot, but it may be worth the point. Shame, Shame, Shame.
Get a trap thrower and invite as many people as you can as often as you can and show them that they created a bigger problem for themselves. Where i live i only legally need 300ft. to shoot trap.
The fit of 1/4" brake line to the .22 bullet depends on how the tube was cut. If you cut the tube with a saw, I'm sure you also filed, beveled, and chamfered the end smooth as well. If you cut the tube with a small pipe cutter, you MUST also ream the inside end of the tube as well as filing, beveling, and chamfering because a pipe cutter squeezes the tube diameter smaller and smaller til it is too weak to stay in one piece and guess what you got? An inward tapered brake line tube end. How do you ream the end of the tube? Just drill the tube with that 7/32" drill rod.
I have a bushmaster .223 frogman do you think this would work for the rifle as I do alot of coyote hunting on my land and don't want to scare away other coy dogs while hunting them
GrecoRef, Use basically the same setup but upscale for the larger size bullet and slightly larger casing for more sound dampening. I've heard a 223 shot threw one similarly built that was slightly louder than a spit but quieter than a standard pellet gun. And for some of the gun haters and plain out fools, just because you want a Silencer or a Suppressor doesn't mean your using it for illegal purposes. When target practicing they are much safer on your hearing than earphones or plugs, not only for your own ear protection but that you can hear others so as to avoid a possible accident etc.

Get a cardboard box. Cut a hole for your hand to enter the box. Fill the box with shredded newspaper. Put a pistol in your hand and put it in the box with the shredded newspaper. Pull the trigger.
OR - Just grab a pillow, place it to the barrel of your pistol and pull the trigger...

actually, people use silencers every day for legitimate reasons. for instance: a buddy of mine has an acre of land on which he likes to grow corn (hey, it's america -- to each his own, right?). he bought a silencer for a .22 to plink crows cuz they kept eating his corn. sounds reasonable to me. so please stop with the omg!-silencers-are-made-for-keeling-people" hate, and just take it for what it's worth. it's a weapon mod that can be applied legally or otherwise, at one's own risk.

ahah...everybody here is a challenge...have you heard of an electronic sound suppressor?i'm working with it...i'll be having the smallest ever gun suppressor! here is the principle; if the sound waves cause by the fired round has a sine curve for instance, we'll make electronic silencer that inverts it into cosine wave...so when it leaves the barrel it gives a zero sound wave because the sound waves cause by explosion was inverted. if the amplifier magnifies sound then mine will reverse-magnify sound... does it sounds weird? hehehe...

Has anybody considered the fact that maybe people want to build a suppressor for the sheer fact that they can SAY they built one? This is the problem with internet critics. They automatically assume that someone who wants to build a suppressor is evil and wants to kill. I built one using two diameters of PVC and creating three expansion chambers. It was a load of fun while building it. I made an alignment mistake by about 1mm and blew the end cap off, but that shot was silent as a mouse. with conception and building, it took me two days to get to the finished project, and it took me 30 seconds to destroy the end. That is what is great. Who wants to buy something when they can put in the time and love to build it? I can tell you right now I'm going to fix my alignment and try again soon!
I built a silencer after seeing a video on it ... the difference is I also got the local sheriff to sign the application to the batf and paid my 200 bucks.
So I own a silencer that is longer than the sig 2022 9mm its attached to, and with sub sonic ammo, it sounds about like a rat fart. ... ok, a LOUD rat fart.
(note: on anything but a bolt action rifle, you will still hear a good bit of noise from the blowback, hammer falling, and chamber cycling)
I also purchased one about 6 months later from gemtech for the same sig 9mm, and it works great. It is also a damn sight easier to open and clean.
Its legal to own, and costs 200 bucks EACH for the tax stamp.
You do NOT have to keep the paperwork with it at all times, its like getting stopped by the cops and not having a your insurance paperwork. prove later that you were insured at that time, and you are fine.
If you do insist on making one yourself, do yourself a favor and invest in a threaded barrel for your weapon for attaching it. Sleeved covers can shift and it doesn't take much for a shot to destroy what you may have spent hours on. Not only that, but how pimp will you look with a DIY style screw clamp on the barrel of your gun?
I have had a cop stop me at the range and check my license when he saw the suppressor, but other than that I have had no issues with law enforcement.
By the way: New threaded barrel for a sig 2022: about $130. Suppressor: about $560. BATF fee: $200.
All told, I was able to convert my weapon and legally own a suppressor for about $900.
It seems like a lot, but when you consider that I can own, and use it legally ... without the fear of committing a felony, its worth it.
A 22 bullet won't fit through a 1/4 inch steel brake line.You will have to use 5/16.
If you really want to know a .22 cal bullet is not 5.7mm i dont know where you are gettin your measurements from but here in Australia we measure things quite differently ti America its actually (fact) 5.588 of a millimetre which is 15/64 af so you dont actually have any fact my friend so unless youre trying to kill someone you need to get your (facts) right ive made zip guns & silencers mate and i am a metal machinist by trade
Why not just buy the low powder .22 bullets all they use for a charge is the primer. Its ten times quieter but range is halved
As has been previously stated, the length of pvc pipe contraption works well. I buy my burp cans from Home Cheap-o...material puts me out $8.00 with glue, fittings, etc. As for internal wrapping of a soft nature, as the simple designs are, it all warrants replacement after 75-100 shots. DynaMat works very well, Pig Mats do the trick, as do good quality paper towels etc. Fine steel wool and grease poses a problem, I find, on account of the mess it makes during assembly/repacking for only very marginal gains in supression over DynaMat.
Do not overlook what youre feeding your weapon. Cheap shit used = shit results. I use a bolt action, but have experimented with semi-autos. Semi auto cycling is iffy at best with most subsonics. On ammunition: Extremely favorable results can be had using Aguila subsonic 40gr. Poor semi auto cycling, however. Remington standard subsonics, and CCI subsonics are also extremely quiet and accurate through my Browning rifle out to 50 yards and cycle reliably through the Mossberg 500 semi-auto. DO NOT BOTHER with the Aguila 60 gr. SSS rounds. They DO NOT stabilize properly with a typical .22 cal 1 in 16 twist, resulting in TERRIBLE consistency and tumbling or key-holing every time at 25 yds. AWESOME knockdown power and low noise in .22lr can be found with RWS subsonic match rounds. I have taken several 300# plus boars with an RWS behind the ear at 50 yd. The RWS are about $10/50 rd. box but they ARE hog rounds. Hit em right and Watch em Drop!
you guys whining about bullets fitting or not, none of you account for bullet squeeze. your bullet is smaller when it exits the bbl. try fitting a bullet into the muzzle of your firearm and see what im talking about.

Picture in your mind: Your "bullet" measures .223 but your "land diameter" (uhh...the inside of the barrel...) measures .217 ok? Definitely a "force..." Now also picture that your "groove diameter" (the true inside measurement taken from the bottom of the grooves...) is .223 ok? No longer a "force", right? Right!
Now allowing for the slight expansion of the fatter (bottom) end of the projectile, the gases will "force" the bullet to spin down through the barrel not "shrinking" but rather perhaps "elongating" and of course carrying the permanent, and most incriminating marks along the length of the bullet....again a "bust" unless one uses an XXXXXXXXX type of bullet.
And then don't fer'get about GSR....

Remember boys 'n' girls, this stuff is for entertainment purposes; a short stick of thin walled brake tube shouldn't constitute a stovepipe, but it does in this case go against the internal coefficients which WOULD initiate an instantaneous stovepipe in a heavier medium.
Use common sense and don't take dangerous chances with explosives.

could I use 1/4 inch black pipe(which measures out to be about .346 inches) and use rock wool instead of steel wool, because steel wool is flammable for use on a semi auto rifle and make it about 18 inches long?

What is all this talk about "Illegal"? It is perfectly legal to buy a silencer in the U.S. only a few states prohibit it, and the ones that don't, don't even require a permit, just a 200 dollar tax
Why dont you just use a Freaking inside micrometer to find the diamiter of the inside of the break line. That would be simpaler and much more acurate than trying to use mathmatic equations. I meen realy what are we trying to do here show eachother who is the biger man? Haha sorry but mathmatics dont impress anyone unless your trying to get a good job. I read everything you all had to say, and I am even more determined to build one of my own. I have a Intratech .22 that i have been modifying nonstop. Once I am finished(and don't get hospitalized in the process, ha) I will be sure to let all of you know of my success/failure. I think I will need to make a few adjustments to frogs plans, but the basic theory seems plausible. I cant believe this has been up for three years. And one more thing, Why take so much time reading this and replying if you people are so utterly against this stuff in general. Leave us enthusiasts be and go annoy some other poor souls.
